Family Scam Shield (“we,” “us,” or “our”) provides scam-awareness newsletters and real-time alerts to help you and your family stay protected. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, why we collect it, how we use and share it, and what rights you have. It applies to users in the United States only.

By using our Service, you acknowledge you have read and agree to the practices described in this Privacy Policy.

1. Information We Collect

We collect only what is necessary to provide the Service:

  • Contact information: Your email address; phone number if you opt into SMS alerts; your name if you voluntarily provide it
  • Family contact details: First names or nicknames and contact information you choose to add for family members you want to protect — provided only at your discretion
  • Subscription and billing data: Plan type, payment status, and transaction records processed by our third-party payment provider; we never store full credit card numbers on our systems
  • Usage and device data: IP address, browser type, device identifiers, pages viewed, links clicked, and approximate location derived from IP address
  • Support communications: Emails, form submissions, and messages you send us, including cancellation or refund requests

We do not intentionally collect Social Security numbers, government IDs, bank credentials, or other sensitive financial information. Never send us this type of information through email or contact forms.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use your information only for the following purposes:

  • Delivering weekly scam briefings, ASAP alerts, and shareable family summaries
  • Managing your subscription, processing payments, and handling trial periods, upgrades, and cancellations
  • Responding to support requests, questions, and refund inquiries
  • Improving and personalizing the Service based on usage patterns
  • Detecting and preventing fraud, abuse, security threats, and technical errors
  • Complying with applicable legal obligations

We do not use your information for purposes that are incompatible with those listed above without your consent.

3. Cookies and Tracking

We use cookies and similar technologies as described in the Cookies & Tracking section above. You can control cookies through your browser settings at any time.

4. How We Share Your Information

We do not sell your personal information. We share information only in the following limited circumstances:

  • Service providers: Trusted vendors who help us operate the Service — including email delivery platforms, SMS gateways, payment processors, and analytics tools. They are contractually prohibited from using your information for any purpose other than providing services to us.
  • Legal obligations: When required by law, court order, subpoena, or valid government request, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of Family Scam Shield, our users, or the public.
  • Business transfers: In the event of a merger, acquisition, bankruptcy, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred to a successor entity, subject to equivalent privacy protections and prior notice to you.
  • Mobile information will not be shared with third parties/affiliates for marketing/promotional purposes. All other categories exclude text messaging originator opt-in data and consent; this information will not be shared with any third parties.

We do not share your information with third parties for their own marketing purposes.

5. Your U.S. Privacy Rights

Depending on the state where you reside, you may have the following rights:

  • Access: Request a copy of the personal information we hold about you
  • Deletion: Request that we delete your personal information, subject to legal exceptions (e.g., billing records required by law)
  • Correction: Request that we correct inaccurate personal information
  • Portability: Receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format where technically feasible
  • Opt-out of sale/sharing: Opt out of any sale or sharing of personal information for targeted advertising, if applicable
  • Non-discrimination: We will not deny service, charge different prices, or provide a lower quality of service because you exercised a privacy right

To submit a request, email info@familyscamshield.com with the subject line “Privacy Request” and include the email address associated with your account. We will respond within 45 days, as required by law, and may take reasonable steps to verify your identity before processing the request.

California residents may also designate an authorized agent to submit requests on their behalf by providing written authorization.

6. Data Retention

We retain your information only as long as necessary to:

  • Provide and improve the Service while your subscription is active
  • Meet legal, tax, or accounting obligations after cancellation
  • Resolve disputes and enforce our terms

When data is no longer needed, we delete it or de-identify it so it can no longer be linked to you.

7. Security

We implement reasonable technical and organizational safeguards to protect your information, including HTTPS encryption for all data in transit, strict access controls on billing and support data, and limited employee access on a need-to-know basis.

No system is 100% secure. While we work hard to protect your information, we cannot guarantee absolute security. You can help protect yourself by using a strong, unique password for your email account and avoiding forwarding suspicious links or scam content to us.

If we become aware of a data breach that affects your rights, we will notify you as required by applicable law.

8. Children’s Privacy

This Service is not directed to children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us immediately at info@familyscamshield.com and we will promptly delete it.

9. Third-Party Links

Our website and emails may contain links to third-party websites or resources. This Privacy Policy does not apply to those sites. We are not responsible for the content or privacy practices of third parties. We encourage you to review the privacy policy of any external site before providing personal information.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect changes to our practices or applicable law. When we do, we will update the “last updated” date at the top of this page. For material changes — changes that significantly affect your rights or how we use your data — we will notify you by email or a prominent notice on the site at least 30 days before the change takes effect. Continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated Policy.
